Historical Perspective

The West Angeles Counseling Center was established more than twenty years ago as a ministry of the West Angeles C.O.G.I.C., under the pastorage of Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr. Today, the Counseling Center recognizes the trichotomy of man and offers a treatment plan to its counselees, which considers the aspects of spirit, soul, and body.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Counseling Center is to be innovative in its purpose, and its purpose is to help "heal the hurting". We don't wish to merely counsel, but rather to empower the client to make rational and healthy life choices for a more abundant life. Empowerment comes through spiritual and relational education, cognitive redirection, coping skills, and emotional management that enable clients to work through the contradictions between wholeness and dysfunctional behavior. Most importantly, empowerment through the grace of God changes destinies.

West Angeles Counseling Center utilizes an integrated treatment model that combines traditional psychological approaches, systems theory and spiritual interventions. Because of a strong philosophical belief that the family is the cornerstone of successful treatment, family therapy and involvement are essential to our wholistic approach.

West Angeles Counseling Center addresses areas such as addiction, communication, depression, marital and family issues, interpersonal relationships, finances, etc. With this in mind, we use a cognitive and behavioral format to renew thinking and promote life transformations. We also believe that the Bible is the holy, inspired Word of God; therefore, we base our services on its basic principles. The Bible guides us in dealing with life issues.

• Clinical services include family, individual counseling, case management, and group therapy. A treatment plan and the criteria for which successful completion of treatment are negotiated with the client, their families (if applicable), and the primary clinician.

• Various assessments are utilized in the process of determining appropriateness for services. Potential clients undergo psycho-social, physical, and psychological assessments to determine needs, stability, and treatment focus. Assessments are also used to identify barriers to treatment and to individualize the treatment plan.

• During the assessment appointment, clinical staff obtains client history in areas such as school, family, prenatal and child development, exposure to domestic violence, abuse, substance use, previous traumas, coping skills, and other areas of concern. Again, this information is used to (1) develop strategies for treatment and (2) individualize the treatment plan.
