Unity Week-Celebrating the
Goodness of Jesus!

By Shaquanda D. Lindsey

Unity Week was born out of the dream of Natoya Frazier of the Young Adult Ministry. She felt that the members of YAM needed a way to get to know one another as they celebrate Jesus Christ. Events were held each night of the week. Three of the events are described below.

 Karaoke Night

JENGA!!!!

This year, Unity week began with Karaoke Night on Saturday, March 20th. Some participants could hold a note and others didn’t find singing to be their calling. In the end, it really didn’t matter one way or the other, fun was had by all. This was the first time we had the Karaoke Night but it won’t be the last.

Higher Learning Fellowship

Fellowship at Shakey's Pizza

Delta's Unite at Shakey's

On Monday March 22nd, the Higher learning Ministries of West Angeles gathered for fellowship at the Shakey's Pizza as part of the Unity Week Celebration. The atmosphere was filled with laughing, eating, and a constant praising of the Lord. The event at Shakey's pizza was not just an evening of fellowship, but a chance for the Higher Learning Ministries to contribute to the West Angeles Scholarship Fund. There was collegiate representation in the form of fraternities and sororities by Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, and Kappa Alpha Psi, whom all understand the necessity of monetary assistance in college. Higher Learning Ministries hopes to assist as many first year college students as possible with the proceeds from this event and the current fundraising effort, that is taking place the entire month of April.

Elder Ben at Gospel Skate Night Fellowship

YAM Sisterhood

Saints gathered around Shakey's gourmet pizza with combined helpings of potato wedges, chicken wings, and a salad bar. Others opted to reminisce back to their childhood with games such as Jinga and Connect Four. As Christians it is always great for us to enjoy praising the Lord in every aspect of our life, but we must also recognize ourselves as blessed individuals that should challenge ourselves to give as often as possible. All in all it was a night of fun in the name of Jesus!

Clippers Basketball

Whoever said a saint can’t have fun? To help close the most exciting and spirit filled week, Unity Week, saints young and old gathered to celebrate the theme: “dwelling together in unity.” Traveling in VIP style, elegant coach buses carried participants who were high in energy and excited about going to the world-renowned Staples Center. Prior to leaving church grounds, Young Adult Ministries collegiate Pastor, Elder Stephens blessed the exciting event. He noted that we were celebrating the goodness of Jesus and that we were being an example to many on how to worship Christ in all aspects of our life.

Friends and family came out to enjoy the YAM event; there were about two hundred in attendance to witness the Los Angeles Clippers host the Minnesota Timberwolves. The cost of the event was a meager $35 which granted NBA lovers a game ticket, transportation and a meal voucher to be redeemed at Mc Donald’s that included, a Big Mac, large fry and medium drink. This price was extremely inexpensive considering that a combo meal itself at the Staples cost an astonishing $9.50. Being at the almost sold out arena gave Basketball fans the opportunity to see NBA greats such as Kevin Garnett, Latrell Sprewell, Elton Brand, and Corey Maggette.

Celebrating Gods mercy and grace on this evening allowed children of God to realize that being a Christian is invigorating, exciting and simply stated FUN!!

Next year YAM hopes to organize a similar trip to see the Los Angeles Lakers.
